Coronavirus: Italy claims 578 additional deaths, but new cases decline

Italy has registered 578 additional coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 21,645 since the start of the epidemic, the civil defense agency said on Wednesday.

The day before, the daily toll was 602 additional deaths. With the exception of a marked decline observed on Easter Sunday, last Sunday (431 additional deaths), Italy has oscillated for eleven days between 525 and 636 more deaths per day.
Only the United States has recorded more deaths since the start of the epidemic.

Italy also reported 2,667 more confirmed cases, compared to 2,972 the previous day. This figure for neo-contaminations is the lowest observed since March 13. In total, the country has 165,155 confirmed cases, the third total after the United States and Spain.
