
The coronavirus pandemic has made 87 deaths in Spain in the last 24 hours, against 102 victims identified Saturday, which is the lowest figure recorded in two months, according to the last assessment given, Sunday, by the Ministry of Health . The total death toll now stands at 27,650 deaths since the virus appeared, compared to 27,563 deaths recorded until Saturday, according to ministry data.
The number of cases confirmed by the coronavirus screening test, known as PCR, reached 231,350, an increase of 421 in 24 hours. Of the total number of confirmed cases, 3,130 people were cured within 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 149,576, while 11,528 patients have been placed in intensive care since the onset of the virus.
Spain entered its third month of confinement on May 14, scheduled until May 24. After having authorized children's walks since April 26, then adult outings, notably to play sports or go for a walk last weekend, the government launched on May 4 the "zero phase" of the deconfinement plan which must be completed. Eleven Spanish autonomous communities have gone through the 1st phase of deconfinement since the beginning of this week, while five others have done so partially.
The regions of Valencia, Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha, as well as 42 health zones in the region of Castile and Leon, will be able to enter from Monday in the first phase of progressive deconfinement, while the community of Madrid , the most affected in the country, like Barcelona and certain areas of Castile and León, were excluded.
The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, announced on Saturday that his executive plans to extend the state of alert for an additional month, until the end of the deconfinement process, in order to continue the fight against new coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
This measure will be adopted next Tuesday by the Council of Ministers before it is submitted the next day to the Congress of Deputies (Lower House of Parliament) for approval.
