The Spanish government plans to extend the border closure until October, preventing tourists from reaching the popular holiday destination.

A series of measures have been proposed by the Council of Ministers, the government's main collective decision-making body, which would maintain restrictions on internal displacement and the closure of its borders until the fall.

Currently, Spaniards are prohibited from traveling between provinces and islands until at least June 22. Locals would also be prohibited from traveling abroad themselves.

The measures proposed by the Spanish government are only indicative, modifications could be made.

Spanish travel agencies describe a real "catastrophe". They should not reopen next week during deconfinement, with other non-essential businesses. "We have nothing to sell," says the Spanish Federation of Travel Agents (CEAV).

The airline Iberia for its part said in a press release Tuesday that the crisis would "last for years". The number of its thefts should not return to normal before 2023, at the earliest, she adds.

On March 16, the Spanish government announced the closure of its borders, allowing only citizens, residents and others with special circumstances to enter the country.
