Coronavirus: four deaths aboard the liner Zaandam in Panama

Four passengers on the liner Zaandam, currently off the coast of Panama, died while at least two others tested positive for coronavirus.

"Holland America Line confirms that four elderly passengers have died on board the Zaandam," the company said in a statement, adding that at least two passengers on the ship, which has about 1,800 people on board, have tested positive for coronavirus .

"Yesterday (Thursday), several patients (among passengers) with respiratory symptoms were tested on the Covid-19 and two were positive," said Holland America.

The company says 53 passengers and 85 crew members have flu-like symptoms.

The Zaandam, flying the Dutch flag and operated by Holland America (Carnival group), left Buenos Aires on March 7. He was to disembark his passengers in San Antonio, Chile, which refused to dock him.

The other South American ports on its route were later closed to it due to restrictions put in place to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus epidemic.

On Thursday, while in Panamanian waters, the ship began to receive assistance from another company ship, the Rotterdam, departing from San Diego, in the United States, with food, personnel and Covid-19 tests.

The company now plans to transfer the “non-sick passengers” to this second ship, after having subjected them to health checks.
