The Belgian health institute Sciensano announced Friday that it has registered 128 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, as well as 12 new deaths. Since the start of the epidemic, 9,695 people have died from Covid-19 in Belgium. In addition, 20 people were admitted to the hospital and 27 were discharged.
If the trends of the week of June 11 to 18 show that the virus has not disappeared from Belgian territory, the evolution of the various indicators is however down. The number of confirmed cases has thus fallen over the last seven days between 2 and 5%. The number of hospital admissions fell by 1 to 3% per day, the number of intensive care patients by 5% per day and the number of deaths from 7 to 9% per day.
To date, a total of 60,476 confirmed cases have been reported, including 34,042 cases (56%) in Flanders, 19,131 cases (32%) in Wallonia, and 6,249 cases (10%) in Brussels. Of the 128 new cases reported, 88 patients live in Flanders, 28 in Wallonia and 12 in Brussels.
A total of 340 patients are currently hospitalized. Among them, 55 patients are in intensive care, a decrease of five patients in the last 24 hours. In addition, 16,751 patients were discharged from hospital and were declared cured since March 15, an increase of 27 cures in the past 24 hours.
Of the 12 deaths, 10 occurred in hospital and two in nursing and care homes. These two cases were confirmed by a Covid-19 test. Of the 9,695 people who died, 49% died in hospital, 50% in a nursing home, about 0.5% in other residential communities and about 1% at home or elsewhere. Most hospital deaths (95%) are confirmed cases. The coronavirus was confirmed to be the cause of deaths in nursing homes in 27% of cases, while 73% of cases were considered suspect.
The number of tests performed in the last 24 hours is 15,430. The total number of tests performed is now 1,087,369, according to data from Sciensano.
