New death toll from Covid-19 kills Russia

Thinking of being transparent, the authorities have reinforced doubts about the credibility of the official balance sheets. The death toll among caregivers suddenly almost increased fivefold.

In late May, there were 101. In mid-June, they rose to 489. The publication by the authorities of the number of doctors and other carers who died from the coronavirus has raised doubts about the credibility of the official mortality figures during the pandemic in Russia. This sharp increase in two weeks contrasts with the assessment progressively drawn up in April by a group of doctors. Day by day, this “memory list” lists the growth in deaths among medical personnel. At the last count, on her website, she listed 459 names. Thirty less than the official balance sheet announced on June 18 by Alla Samoïlova, the head of Roszdravnadzor, the federal medical surveillance agency.

"It’s hard to understand how they calculate their number," said Alexei Erlikh, one of the doctors behind the alternative list. Confused, this chief cardiologist at a Moscow hospital wonders about the huge leap in the new official report. "No doubt they realized that the previous figure of 101 dead seemed unrealistic given our higher data. The authorities now want to appear serious and credible. "

"The country was not ready"

The confusion is all the greater since, in a press release, Roszdravnadzor returned to the declaration of its chief to minimize its impact: it was not an "official figure", but a simple established estimate from "data circulating on the Internet". That is to say, no doubt, on the "memory list". No further assessment has since been released by the government.
