
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, announced on Wednesday that his country will pay national tribute on July 16 to the victims of the new coronavirus.
King Felipe VI will preside over a tribute ceremony with senior officials from European institutions and the World Health Organization (WHO), Sanchez told the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
“The state ceremony in tribute to the 27,000 compatriots who lost their lives” as well as to the people “who have been on the front line in the fight against the pandemic during these three months will take place on July 16”, he said. he adds.
It will be marked by the presence of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, the High Representative of the European Union (EU), the Spanish Josep Borrell, as well as the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
One of the countries most in mourning for the new coronavirus, Spain had declared a 10-day national mourning in tribute to the victims of this pandemic which killed more than 27,000 people.
About 52% of Spaniards (25 million people) have already started the 3rd phase of the deconfinement plan, while the rest are in 2nd phase.
Spain’s “progressive” deconfinement plan, launched on May 4, has four phases, which are implemented at different rates in each region depending on the evolution of the epidemic.
