WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday that the situation was worsening in the world, except in Europe, and warned against letting go. In Russia, Moscow began its deconfinement despite a number of cases still large.
The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed more than 407,900 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report established by AFP from official sources Tuesday evening.
More than 7,169,500 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic.
The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the most affected country in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 111,375 deaths for 1,968,221 cases.
After the United States, the most affected countries are the United Kingdom with 40,883 deaths for 289,140 cases, Brazil with 37,134 deaths (707,412 cases), Italy with 34,043 deaths ( 235,561 cases), and France with 29,296 deaths (191,394 cases).
"Although the situation in Europe is improving, the world is getting worse," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a virtual press conference in Geneva on Monday evening.
The crisis caused by the pandemic is the largest in the number of countries that will find themselves in recession since the Great Depression of the 1870s, the World Bank said on Monday. The global economy is expected to contract by 5.2% this year, unheard of since the Second World War. 70 to 100 million people could fall into extreme poverty.
