The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 727,288 people worldwide since the WHO office in China reported the onset of the disease at the end of December, according to a report established by AFP from official sources Sunday at 11:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 p.m. Belgian time). More than 19,674,290 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 11,665,200 are now considered cured.
EUROPE
Germany:
The daily number of coronavirus infections has fallen sharply in Germany. The German Institute for Epidemiology and Health Surveillance Robert Koch (RKI) reports 555 new positive cases detected in the last 24 hours. On Saturday, the RKI had reported 1,122 positive tests, down slightly from Friday and its 1,147 cases.
In the past 24 hours, one person has also died in Germany as a result of Covid-19. Twelve deaths were reported on Saturday and eight on Friday.
Since the start of the epidemic, Germany has recorded 215,891 cases of infection and 9,196 deaths.
Netherlands:
Two mink farms in the Netherlands, in Elsendorp (Gemert-Bakel) and in Vredepeel (Venray), have been infected with Covid-19. There are 12,000 and 6,000 mink respectively that live there. This brings the number of Dutch mink farms infected with the coronavirus to 29. In 27 previous cases, all mink were culled. This will also be the case soon in these two farms, the ministries of health and agriculture said Sunday morning.
Swiss:
Switzerland has 152 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, according to figures from the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP). No additional deaths are to be deplored, but five new hospitalizations have been reported. Switzerland had 182 more cases on Friday. It had previously fallen below the 100-case mark on Monday (66). From Tuesday and for the rest of the week, this threshold has been clearly crossed. The number of deaths stands at 1,712.
United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, 1,062 new coronavirus infections were recorded in 24 hours, health authorities said on Sunday. This is the first time since the beginning of June that the daily number of infections has again exceeded 1,000. New measures have been announced for certain areas.
In all, around 310,000 Britons have been infected and 46,576 have died.
AMERICA
United States
The United States passed the milestone of 5 million official cases of infection with the new coronavirus on Sunday since the start of the pandemic, according to the count from Johns Hopkins University, which refers.
The world's leading economic power is by far the most affected in the world by the pandemic in absolute terms, with more than 162,000 dead on its soil.
The milestone of 4 million cases was reached a little over two weeks ago.
To come to the aid of the millions of Americans threatened with deportation and stricken by unemployment because of the pandemic and the containment measures, President Donald Trump unveiled on Saturday a new aid plan for the American economy. He promulgated it by decree, for lack of agreement in Congress.
"We should never have come to this. No other country in the world has been hit as hard as us," denounced Democrat Joe Biden, denouncing the inaction of Donald Trump, whom he defies in the presidential election of November. "He didn't want to have to deal with this pandemic, so he stopped trying. He didn't do his job."
The contagion figures began to rise sharply from the end of June in the country, which recorded more than 70,000 new cases diagnosed per day in mid-July.
Despite this, back to school has started in person in several US states, including where the coronavirus is still actively circulating. Quarantines have already had to be imposed after the occurrence of cases among students.
The death curve has also risen, regularly exceeding 1,000 deaths for two weeks. However, the number of deaths had not exploded so far, as some experts feared.
Brazil:
Brazil became the second country on Saturday to exceed 100,000 dead from the coronavirus, after the United States, a massacre in which President Jair Bolsonaro said he had a "clear conscience" despite criticism.
The largest country in Latin America, with a population of 212 million, also crossed another symbolic threshold on Saturday, that of 3 million people infected.
OCEANIA
Australia:
The Australian state of Victoria has recorded 17 deaths from Covid-19 in 24 hours, the highest number of daily deaths the country has seen so far, according to figures released on Sunday. The state of Victoria has registered 394 new cases of coronavirus since Saturday, State Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said.
The previous highest toll was 15 deaths just four days ago - with all deaths recorded in Victoria state.
Sunday's figures bring the total number of deaths in Australia to 295.
The state of Victoria is the epicenter of a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak in Australia, which has forced the city of Melbourne into a severe six-week lockdown, including a nighttime curfew and fines for those that violate sanitary rules.
New Zealand:
New Zealand hit the hundred-day mark on Sunday without any new coronavirus contamination, even though health officials have warned that letting down is out of the question.
There are currently 23 cases of people carrying Covid-19 in the Oceania archipelago but they have all been detected at the border, on entering the country, and are in quarantine.
